Cash Flow
Cash flow tracks the actual money coming into and going out of your business. Positive cash flow means more money came in than went out. Negative cash flow means the opposite. Unlike profit (which is an accounting concept), cash flow is about real money in your bank account. Many profitable businesses fail because they run out of cash.
Formula
Cash Inflows - Cash Outflows = Net Cash Flow
In plain English
How much more (or less) cash you have at the end of the period compared to the beginning
Why Cash Flow Matters
Cash flow is the lifeblood of your business. You can be profitable on paper and still unable to make payroll if your customers pay slowly and your expenses come due first. This metric tells you whether you actually have the cash to operate day-to-day.
